Showjumping is taking off in China, with a new Chinese stage of the FEI World Cup this year and a new "Masters" competition in Hong Kong in 2012.

Showjumping is becoming popular in China, said Alex's mother Sarah Noble, an advisor to the Chinese Equestrian Federation. "They jump 1m40 or 50 in national competitions and a large number of European horses have been bought to compete," she said.

The FEI currently has 14 World Cup leagues with world-class riders qualifying for a final held in Europe each year.

The world class and top ranked Chinese rider from the China League will qualify for the 2012 final in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands (April 18-22, 2012), however, he must compete on a horse based outside China to comply with Chinese quarantine laws.

All world-class international riders are also invited to take part in the China League, on Chinese horses.
Now in March 2012, a new showjumping event, the CSI***** Hong Kong Masters, run by the European Equestrian Masters (EEM), is scheduled to take place.

Christophe Ameeuw, of EEM, said 30 world-class riders would compete for prize pot totaling 1 million at the biennial competition.

With the approval of the State General
Administration of Sports (SGAS) and China
Equestrian Federation (CEF), the China
Equestrian Festival will be permanently held in the Jinma_Racecourse in Wenjiang, says Qin Wenlin, chief of the Chengdu Sports Bureau.
Sponsored by the SGAS and CEF, the four-day 2011 China Equestrian Festival was the
first national equestrian event ever held in a
city in the central and western part of China, accordingto CEF vice_chairman Wang
Xuanqing. China Equestrian Festival is also the highest-ranking and largest
Equestrian event in China at this time.

China to create $US4 billion Horse City

The developers of a $US1.25 billion racecourse in Dubai have announced a joint venture to develop Tianjin Horse City in China.
Reports suggest the overall development will cost $US4 billion.
Its backers confirmed that the college and its associated facilities will cost $US1.46 billion alone.
Meydan City Corporation, the Dubai state-owned developer of the Dubai racing facility, says Tianjin Horse City which will be established in Ninghe County, Tianjin, in 2010.
It will train 8000 equestrian professionals, breed 1000 stud horses, produce horse feeds, conduct horse auctions, hold international and domestic professional horse races, promote and impart equine culture and knowledge to youths, provide tourism services and protect the wellbeing and interests of equines.
In addition to an equestrian college, feedstuff plant, breeding base, horse hospital, and quarantine centre, Tianjin Horse City will also include five-star to seven-star luxury hotels, a clubhouse, commercial offices, and residential facilities.
It is estimated that the project will pay hundreds of millions of taxes and profits to the State within five years, provide employment for 10,000 people, and develop a horse industry economy.
The planned facility has already filed its application to the Chinese Equestrian Association for the establishment of a national equestrian sports and horse racing training base.
Tianjin Horse City is to be jointly established by Meydan City Corporation (Dubai), TAK Design Consultants (Malaysia), Zhouji Jiye (China) and Tianjin Farm Group (China).
The group has prepared two five-year plans.
The first plan spans five years and eight months from May 2010 to December 2015.
By the end of 2011, the equestrian college, stud base and feed plant will be completed and put into trial operation.
By the end of 2012, the horse trading centre, hotel, clubhouse, shopping centre, and entertainment centre will be completed.
By the end of 2013, offices and living facilities will be completed.
By the end of the following year, national standard club events, national equestrian club and national equestrian park franchises will be developed, and the preparation of a horse culture communication market and international events market will commence.
The second five-year plan spans from January 2016 to December 2020, which will focus on the listing of the Company and cohesion with the international horse industry.
Projects:

1. Hua Zhi Jie International Equestrian College

The equestrian college is a college jointly established by the equestrian park, agricultural university, and the sports university. It is responsible to train sufficiently qualified professionals as future equestrians to support the horse industry. The college will have veterinary courses, horse stall management, training courses for equestrian coaches, sportsmen, umpires, horse breakers, horse breeding, club management, events management and equine industry design. The college will adopt a credit system, with two-year and three-year programmes, and will recruit students nationwide. The college will be put into operation in 2012, and will recruit 1000 students with an annual growth of 10% intake. There will be 50 teachers and assistant teachers. The college will have a land area of 4,000 mu, and a gross floor area of 600,000 m2. The total investment will be RMB10 billion (roughly $US1.46billion). Its facilities will include a horse hospital, quarantine centre, multi-purpose equine facilities, spectator terraces, horse stalls, race tracks, indoor horse stable, feedstuff plant, outdoor sports field, and outdoor exercise fields.

2. Horse Breeding Base

It plans to breed 1000 different blood horses, most of which will be derived from good stud horses in the world. Horse breeding traditionally has a long cycle, with a breeding period of one year, a lactation period of 7-8 months, and a training period of 2-3 years. A highly ranked imported blood horse may sell at RMB1-10 million or more.
A horse will consume about 10kg fodder and other feedstuff. 1000 horses will produce about 10 tons of manure. The base will use a biomass pool to generate methane for daily cooking, heating and lighting. An annual production of marsh dregs and marsh liquids may be used to fertilize 7500 mu of nearby farm land. Marsh liquid may also be used to spray farm products in place of pesticides, or be supplied to nearby poultry farmers as feedstuff additives. Such practices will be both economically beneficial and environment friendly.

3. Feedstuff Plant

The plant may produce 10,000 tons of compound feedstuff, which may satisfy the needs of 2700 horses for a year. The production will combine imported formulas, technology, key equipment, and some materials with domestic processing, packaging and marketing, with a target of 50% export. When the quality of production stabilizes, the proportion of domestic materials will be increased gradually.

4. Horse Auction Market

Horse auction elements will be constructed according to market requirements, and the direction of breeding will be guided by market operations. It is prepared to establish an agency relationship with international and domestic horse breeding areas, adopt video technology for horse auctions, and provide such horse trade services as customs declaration, animal inspections and quarantine, customs clearances, industry, commerce and tax procedures, breeding, medical, logistic, insurance and guest reception services.
The horse market will have an initial trade volume of 700 horses a year, with an annual increase of 10%, up to 1050 horses a year in the fifth year.

5. Equestrian Club and Equestrian Part Franchise Company

The franchise company will develop 500 standard equestrian clubs and 500 equestrian parks, with 25,000 employees and 50,000 studhorses, with a production value of RMB30-50 billion.

6. Equestrian Event Company

The equestrian event company will organize various equestrian events under the authorization of the equestrian association, with the funds from sponsors and the support of local governments.
The company will make efforts to establish the China Equestrian Professional League. In particular, in the first year, the company will standardize various equestrian matches, train various talents, and enhance the level of equestrian sport and the quality of horses in China; in the successive two years, the company will use formal matches to promote the construction of standardized clubs, establish industrial codes and standards, popularize professional equestrian matches, lead equestrian clubs to become international in standards, and promote the equestrian and horse industry to adopt healthy, profitable and sustainable development towards modernization, professionalism and mass consumer appeal.

7. Horse Quarantine Centre

The horse quarantine centre will be constructed at a location close to the airport. It is an important component of the horse trade centre and racecourse.

8. Racecourse

The commencement of the construction of a horse racing field will depend on the decision of the State on commercial horse racing. The group will be fully prepared for such a construction.

9. Hotel, Clubhouse, Shipping Centre and Recreational and Entertainment Centre

There are plans to construct a five-star to seven-star international hotel with a capacity for 3600 guests. The clubhouse will be composed of premium and mid class clubhouses. Offices and living facilities will be able to accommodate 20,000 people.
The recreational and entertainment centre will be constructed as a tourist resort for horse riding, horse breeding, horse viewing and equestrian sports.

Review of China Horse Industry 2011

Present by HORFA Research Center
(For Chinese edition, please request it by email.)
The Beijing Olympics provided a significant boost for the Chinese equestrian industry, resulting in a sharp increase in the number of horses imported from 420 in 2007 to 1,782 in 2008.

Two years later, the Guangzhou Asian Games and the first HORFA Equestrian Trade Show in Shanghai provided further impetus to this trend, resulting in another 10% rise.
In 2011, the market became even hotter.

• Events
Dec. 31, 2011
The Sports Bureau of Shanghai announced that Shanghai will host over 30 international events in 2012, including the Global Champions Tour (Equestrian).
Aug. 27, 2011
The 2011 China League of FEI World Cup Jumping Competition opened in the Beijing International Equestrian Club. Thirty-three riders from China, Hong Kong, Germany, Belgium, Ireland, the Philippines, Korea and Holland competed in the games.
May 19-21, 2011
2011Equestrian Beijing International Grand was held in China National Stadium (the Bird’s Nest) from 19 -21, May. It is the first FEI 2-star event in China.

• Construction
Dubai-China International Horse City (Meydan Tianjin horse city) will start construction in 2012 in the Pan Qilihai District, Tianjin, China. The project covers over 330 million square meters and costs 14 billion RMB. It is expected to finish in 5 years and provide 10,000 jobs.
In Guangzhou, the first project suitable for competition of foreign horses will be initiated this year. The project signals the first venue invested, managed and operated by Hong Kong Jockey Club in mainland China after the Asian Games. It also marks that HKJC will start providing technical support for competition ground and equipment in Asia.
Chabei, a district of Zhangjiakou City, Hebei, is intended to build the world's biggest horse theme park based on the No.3 National Military Horse Ranch. The park will consist of a horse culture museum, an equestrian performance center, a racecourse, a riding area, a research center and a horse trading center.

• Support from the Government
The CCP Secretary of Animal Husbandry Bureau of Xinjiang Autonomous Region told that by 2020, Xinjiang will build a comprehensive horse industry based on horse products and supported by labouring horses and entertaining horses. It will also develop the horse breeding and horse sport industry.
As Xilinguole, Inner Mogolia was awarded the China Horse Capital. The city announced in September(2011) that it will started constructing the core project of a China Horse Capital. The project will cost 1.05 billion RMB. Its Plan is already under discussion.
The Chengdu Municipal Government and the Sports Bureau of Sichuan organized the first National Equestrian and Horse-racing Event in mid-west China in September,2011. with a spokesman commenting: “We don’t only want it to be an equestrian event but expect it to drive the whole horse industry.”

• Education
The China Agricultural University started in July 2011 the first equestrian major in China in collaboration with the Royal Agricultural College from the UK. The school is going to offer four-year equestrian courses to high school graduates and their equivalents.
On August 29, 2011, the journalist learned from Wuhan Commercial Service College that the Social Physical Education major (Horseracing Industry Management) is listed in the Vocational Education Training Camp program supported by the state treasury. A total of RMB 2.8 million will be offered by the central and provincial government to build a horseracing training camp on the campus.
The Sports Bureau of Shanxi has submitted an application for "the Study on Personnel Demand of Horse Industry in China" to the Department of Science and Technology of Shanxi.
Data from HORFA2011 shows that two features demand particular attention presently:

• More and more regional governments have plan on the development of horse and equestrian industry;
Projects have been planned, approved or are in construction in Sichuan, Hainan, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Tianjin, Hebei, Gansu, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia. Some projects are near completion.

• A group of new horse-owners and owners-to-be appeared in rich areas as the Yangtze River Delta region and the Bohan-Rim;
They are young, energetic, rich, and internationally-educated. They include students, lawyers, doctors, professional managers, entrepreneurs and family business heirs, Zhu Meimei (19) and Han Zhuangzhuang (20) being their representatives.
On the other hand, in equestrian clubs in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai the ratio of students under 18 is now over 20% and still on the rise; the smallest horse-owner known is only 10 years old. It shows that more and more elite families are capable of this and would like their children to develop better qualities through the noble equestrian sports.
We expect that demand for high-quality horses, harnesses, studs construction and planning services, equestrian games planning services and other services/products in the Chinese market will grow sharply in the next 5 years.

HORFA 2012- China Shanghai International Horse fair will be held from Sept. 21 - 23,2012 in Shanghai

The three-day HORFA2011 came to a successful close at Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall on Oct. 30, 2011.

A total of 82 exhibitors from 18 countries and districts around the world, including the USA, Australia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia, Belgium, India, Dubai, Sweden and Mexico, joined in. Japan, France and Holland, the three countries known for their advanced horse industry, exhibited in national pavilions. At the forums held concurrently, industry professionals, business visitors and high-end visitors abound. Intriguing programs as the PONY Riding, Horse Show and the Horse-riding Training attracted many visitors who stopped, watched, and participated. The HORFA Global Outstanding Horse-Owners Night, was attended by 400 horse industry professionals, was the most popular. Through this opening, HORFA was established as the most influential international horse trade show in China as well as Asia, which combines horse exhibition, trading, industry meeting and Horse-Owners party and targets at horse farm owners, equestrian club owners, present and future horse-owners – the wealthy people in China.

The horse industry of China is currently in a period of transition, with the emphasis slowly shifting towards equestrian diciplines, racing and entertainment. At this time, China has more than 450 horse ranches, 43,000 horse owners, and over 1 million horse fans; with these numbers growing at an annual rate of 20%, signaling a huge potential for the industry in China.
